Egypt Moves to Localise Desalination Membrane Production
A new factory will produce desalination membranes locally to reduce import reliance and support water security.
A new factory to produce seawater desalination membranes is being planned as part of efforts to expand water infrastructure and reduce reliance on imported components.
The facility will manufacture reverse osmosis membranes, a core element in desalination systems, under a broader strategy to support growing water demand driven by urban expansion in coastal areas.
Officials said the project aligns with a national desalination framework extending to 2050, which is being implemented through successive five-year plans with a target production capacity of around 9 million cubic metres per day.
The initiative is intended to localise production of key inputs used in desalination plants, with a focus on reducing operational costs and supporting technology transfer through cooperation with international partners and the private sector.
The project will be developed in collaboration between the New Urban Communities Authority, CITIC Construction and ANCOM, with CITIC Construction contributing technical expertise in desalination systems.
