Childhood Cancer Early Detection Programme Launches Nationwide in 2027

A nationwide early detection programme for childhood cancer will launch across all governorates in January 2027 with an estimated budget of EGP 1 billion, according to Ministry of Health and Population spokesperson Hossam Abdel Ghaffar.

The programme will target children and adolescents from birth to 18 years old and establish a standard pathway from early detection to diagnosis and specialist treatment. Screening and case identification will begin at primary healthcare units and school clinics, with suspected cases referred to paediatric oncology centres for further assessment.

The initiative will be introduced in three phases following a pilot programme scheduled to continue through the end of 2026. The ministry said the system is intended to shorten the time between first contact with the healthcare system and definitive diagnosis.

The first phase will focus on six paediatric cancers identified by the World Health Organization: acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, Hodgkin lymphoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, Wilms tumour, low-grade glioma and retinoblastoma.

The programme aims to reduce the time required to diagnose these cancers by at least 20% through earlier case identification and faster access to specialised services.
