American Hospital Dubai Performs First Non-Surgical Cyst Removal
The percutaneous ultrasound-guided procedure removes the cyst via a tiny puncture with no sutures or activity restrictions.
A non-surgical technique for removing ganglion cysts has been performed for the first time in the region at American Hospital Dubai, using an ultrasound-guided approach that avoids traditional surgery. Ganglion cysts are fluid-filled lumps that typically develop on the wrist, hand or knee, and can cause pain, restrict movement or present cosmetic concerns.
The procedure uses high-resolution diagnostic ultrasound and an arthrogram to map the cyst’s structure, including its feeding channels and surrounding tissue. A microblade is then inserted through a small skin puncture along a guided path to remove the cyst completely.
No sutures are required, with the puncture site sealed using skin adhesive. Patients can resume normal activity, including full use of the affected area, on the same day.
The hospital said the method is designed to reduce recurrence risks associated with fluid drainage techniques, while avoiding the incisions, scarring and post-operative rehabilitation typically linked to open surgery.
