Eid Meets the Chinese Zodiac in Rizo Masr’s Eidiya Card
Rizo Masr’s latest design reimagines the classic eidiya envelope with Chinese symbolism and Arabic calligraphy.
The arrival of Eid is marked by a cherished ritual: the giving of eidiya, a chance for grandparents and relatives to lovingly spoil the children of the household. The tradition celebrates generosity, strengthens family bonds, and adds an extra layer of excitement to the festive days of Eid. This year, Cairo-based Risograph studio Rizo Masr has introduced a new card that reimagines the eidiya envelope with a cross-cultural twist.
Their newly released The Fire Horse Eid Saeed Edeya card brings together the warmth of the Egyptian Eid tradition with the symbolism of the Chinese Lunar New Year. Designed with tones of gold, black, and red, the gift card features a beautiful illustration of a fire horse - an emblem representing energy and transformation in the Chinese zodiac - with Arabic calligraphy embedded within its flowing tail, a fitting blend of two cultural calendars.
The year of the Fire Horse only happens once every 60 years, the last one being 1966. It is said to bring intense energy, enthusiasm, and rapid change. This energy is captured on the card with the horse’s bold stance and flowing tail, boldly facing the new year ahead.
While eidiya envelopes are traditionally simple, Rizo Masr’s design transforms the small gesture into a loving keepsake. The cross-cultural design pairs the warmth of Egyptian greetings with the courage of the Chinese horse, creating a gift that can last long after the eidiya itself is spent.
The Fire Horse Eid Saeed Edeya card was illustrated by Yousef Sabry, founder of Rizo Masr, with Arabic calligraphy by Yomna Ayman. The card can be purchased from the Rizo Masr shop.
