Since we're almost at the end of Sahel Season, here all the viral creations that washed up on the shore this summer.
Sahel season is almost at an end. The waves are making their last goodbyes, the various food and beverage pop-ups are preparing to head East to Cairo, and even the most dedicated of summerers are beginning to pack up their suitcases. Naturally, though, before we leave, we have to say goodbye to our favourite thing about this summer: the crazy concoctions that washed up on the North Coast's shore.
This summer, we saw it all, and while we might live to take that back next year, we're choosing to enjoy the good times. This is why we've prepared this list of Sahel's most insane - and often simultaneously the most delicious - creations, for you to make the rounds before you finally head back to the city.
Mangolé Brulée - Tortina
This fruit-dessert hybrid is exactly what it sounds like: it's créme brulée in a mango, complete with the crackling top that you can crack into with a spoon. It's the warmth of the winter dessert made tropical.
Watermelon Burger – Melloo
Melloo put low-salt cheese in between two circular slices of watermelon, and the internet went crazy. You can still catch the North Coast’s most famous concoction of the summer – and eat it in secret – at Melloo in Stella Heights.
Ice Cream Fried Chicken Sandwich - Crispy Hen
Of all the sauces and garnishes you could put on fried chicken, Crispy Hen puts ice cream and hot honey. This arguably well-suited summer snack (it combines two very summer foods) is available at Crispy Hen’s North Coast branches.
Road Trip Shots - 1980
If you, like most of us, are not remotely employed (or better yet, unemployed) and still make the long trip to the North Coast every weekend, you need a snack for the road. Or a shot for the road, like 1980s single-serve doses of Matcha, Espresso, or Mixed Berries designed to stir straight into your drink, no prep or baristas required.
Pink Sandwich – Cult
This summer, Cult decided it was time to make the classic tunacado pink. So they put together a cheerful tuna mix infused with Greek yogurt, Dijon mustard, and beetroot, topped with avocado, house-made pesto, and wedged inside their cult-status bread like it just finished a Pilates class.
Açaí Cone - Dara’s Ice Cream & Copa Açaí
Copa Açaí’s all-natural Brazilian açaí is blended with Dara’s signature waffle cone, to create the Açaí Cone: a fruity, antioxidant-rich treat that’s as healthy as it is photogenic. Topped with crunchy granola and fresh fruit, it’s a funky remix of a summer staple.
Blueberry Burger - Hunger Station
Hunger Station put blueberry jam on a burger, because why not let dinner and dessert collide in one deeply confusing bite? The sweet/savoury sandwich is available at Hunger Station’s branches in the North Coast for the reminiscence of your mum’s jam sandwiches with an added punch.
Matcha Tap - Brown Nose
This summer, things got real bad – so bad we could no longer wait for our coffee to be prepared at our favourite coffee shops any more. In response, Brown Nose Marassi created two taps: one that produces iced Spanish latte, and another that churns a river of iced sea salt vanilla matcha latte.
Scoop the Glow Ice Cream Truck – Bubblzz
Skincare brand Bubblzz set up an ice truck slash portable shop in the North Coast, that lands in a mysterious new location every weekend. Keep up with their Instagram to find out where they land, and walk in, buy a scoop of chocolate gelato, and a tub of body scrub that smells like the same thing.
