Hapag-Lloyd - German international shipping and container transportation company, considered to be amongst the largest in the world - is developing a new transshipment terminal in Damietta, about 60 kilometres from the northern Suez Canal exit. The terminal is expected to increase Damietta's transshipments business and affect its competitiveness in the Eastern Mediterranean market.
The harbour basin's water depth will be 18 metres, allowing it to accommodate ships of most sizes. The terminal is scheduled for completion by the second half of 2024, with activities to pick up in 2025.
