Specialist Clinics Open to Treat Internet & Gaming Addiction

Specialised clinics for the misuse and addiction to the internet and electronic games have begun operating across six psychiatric hospitals as part of the Ministry of Health and Population’s “Your Health Is Happiness” mental health initiative.

The first phase includes weekly clinics held every Wednesday at Al Abbassia for Mental Health, Al Khanka for Mental Health, Al Maamoura for Mental Health in Alexandria, Damira for Mental Health in Dakahlia, Minya for Mental Health, and Assiut for Mental Health.

The clinics target all age groups and operate through an integrated approach that combines early diagnosis, structured assessment and tailored treatment pathways. Patients are evaluated using detailed clinical assessments, including surveys and an Internet Addiction questionnaire, to measure excessive digital use and determine appropriate intervention.

The programme also sets age-specific “safe hours” for internet and gaming use as part of treatment and prevention planning.

Alongside clinical services, the initiative includes awareness campaigns delivered through the National Platform for Mental Health and across social media, focusing on the risks of digital addiction and available support services. The aim is to expand public understanding while improving access to diagnosis and care.

To support implementation, 120 medical and clinical staff members have completed specialised training aligned with international treatment protocols for behavioural and digital addiction.

The National Platform for Mental Health and Addiction Treatment continues to provide awareness and diagnostic resources online, offering guidance to individuals and families seeking support.
