Public Schools to Return to Two Terms Starting in 2025/2026 Year

Saudi Arabia’s public schools will revert to a two-term academic year starting in the 2025-2026 Hijri year, ending the three-term model adopted in recent education reforms. The change follows a thorough review and reflects consultations aimed at better aligning schooling with local needs, including seasonal demands in regions such as Makkah, Madinah, Jeddah and Taif.

The previous three-semester system ensured a minimum of 180 instructional days annually, similar to standards in OECD and G20 countries. However, the shift to two terms highlights a strategic preference for flexibility in scheduling rather than the number of semesters as a measure of education quality. Private and international schools, universities, and vocational institutions will retain the freedom to select the academic structure that suits them best.

This adjustment is part of a broader effort to balance educational standards with practical realities, including the cultural and climatic factors affecting different parts of the country.
