Omar Effendi El-Hegaz to Be Transformed Into Four-Star Hotel

The Omar Effendi building in El-Hegaz, a historic Cairo landmark, is set to be converted into a four-star hotel under a new plan by Misr Hotels Company.

Originally established in 1856 as Orosdi-Back by Austro-Hungarian merchants, the Omar Effendi chain adopted its current name in 1921 after being acquired by an Egyptian businessman.

The conversion process will begin with a series of executive and legal steps, including the commissioning of a full feasibility study. This study will address financial, technical, and marketing aspects and will be carried out by a firm registered with the Central Bank of Egypt. An engineering assessment will also be conducted to evaluate the structural condition of the building and determine its suitability for hotel use. A detailed timeline will be developed to guide the various phases of the project.

Operating under the Holding Company for Tourism, Hotels, and Trade, Misr Hotels manages notable properties such as the Nile Ritz-Carlton in Cairo and the Safir Dahab Resort Hotel. The initiative comes as Misr Hotels continues to strengthen its portfolio. In the first nine months of FY2024/2025, the company recorded revenues of EGP 1.42 billion, an increase from EGP 1.003 billion during the same period the previous year.
