Newborn Genetic Screening Programme Launched in Abu Dhabi
This marks one of the largest programmes of its kind in the world, currently available at Kanad and Danat Al Emarat hospitals as a voluntary option.

The Department of Health in Abu Dhabi has introduced a newborn genetic screening initiative offering whole-genome sequencing to detect more than 815 treatable childhood genetic conditions. This marks one of the largest programmes of its kind in the world, currently available at Kanad and Danat Al Emarat hospitals as a voluntary option.
Cord blood samples are collected at birth, with parental agreement, to uncover hidden disorders, including metabolic, blood, immune conditions, and rare illnesses such as spinal muscular atrophy. Results arrive within 21 days, with genetic counselling and referrals arranged where needed.
The scheme is set to roll out across all maternity hospitals in the emirate, aiming to reach Emirati children more broadly.
Over the last two decades, Abu Dhabi has gradually integrated genomics into public healthcare through the Emirati Genome Programme, including premarital screening and family health measures.
