CAPMAS: Egypt’s Population Hits 108 Million

Egypt’s population has climbed to 108 million, according to new figures from the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS). The milestone was recorded on 16 August 2025, about 287 days after the country crossed 107 million last November. That gap is longer than the 268 days it took to rise from 106 to 107 million, reflecting a slowdown in growth.

Between November 2024 and August 2025, Egypt registered 1.48 million births, averaging around 5,165 per day, or one every 16.7 seconds. While still high, this pace is slower than previous years, when daily births averaged over 5,300. Official data also shows a broader decline in fertility. The national birth rate fell to 18.5 per 1,000 people in 2024, down from 19.4 a year earlier. Over the past decade, the average number of children per woman has dropped from 3.5 in 2014 to just 2.41 in 2024.

Birth rates remain highest in Upper Egypt, led by Assiut at 23.8 per 1,000, followed by Sohag, Qena, Minya, and Beni Suef. By contrast, governorates such as Port Said, Damietta, Dakahlia, Gharbia, and Alexandria recorded much lower rates, ranging from 11.8 to 15.4 per 1,000.
