New National Archive Documents Rare & Historic Trees in Egypt
The archive will highlight trees aged over a century, including those linked to historical events or rare species.

The National Organisation for Urban Harmony (NUOH) has launched a project to create a national archive of Egypt’s ancient and rare trees, classifying them as natural and cultural heritage. The archive will highlight trees aged over a century, including those linked to historical events or rare species.
The initiative will involve field surveys using geographic information systems (GIS), historical documentation, and a digital database with an interactive public map. A committee of environmental experts, NGOs, and consultants held its first meeting to finalise criteria for classifying trees and safeguarding 13 historic gardens nationwide.
The project aims to bolster legal protections through proposed legislation and community programs like Tree Guardian, which encourages public participation in preservation. The organisation has drafted guidelines for maintaining heritage green spaces, emphasising integration into eco-cultural tourism routes.
