GEM’s Opening Invite Design Is a Gold-Gilded Miniature King Tut Coffin
Egypt sends out mini king Tutankhamun golden coffins as GEM opening invites
Only Egypt can turn an invitation into an artefact. As the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) prepares to open its doors on Saturday, November 1st, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has revealed the design of the invitation sent to guests attending the historic inauguration, a gold-gilded miniature sarcophagus of King Tutankhamun.
The design pays homage to one of the museum’s most iconic treasures, Tutankhamun’s golden coffin, chosen as a symbol of Egypt’s artistic mastery and its enduring dialogue with history.
Produced by Knooz for Archaeological Models under the supervision of the Supreme Council of Antiquities’ Art Committee, the piece was crafted through a multi-stage process of sculpting, moulding, gilding, and velvet lining.
Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Ahmed Issa described the invitation as a “commemorative gift” reflecting the beauty and craftsmanship of Egypt’s heritage, a tangible keepsake of a moment that marks a new era for the country’s cultural landscape.
