From Waste to Good Taste Hosts Upcycling Contest at Cairo Vintage Souq

At the next edition of thrifting haven Cairo Vintage Souq, sustainable design initiative From Waste to Good Taste (FWGT) invites shoppers to slow down, and consider what they could do with what they already own – more specifically, the ties they own. This Saturday, September 13th, FWGT is hosting an upcycling competition called ‘Leh Termeeha W Heya Lesa Feeha’, where each contestant gets five ties and an hour to create something entirely new. The winners, as decided by a board of seasoned upcycling masters, will receive a EGP 200 voucher for sustainable local brand Almah, as well as a feature on FWGT’s social media. All proceeds from the competition will be donated to the Egyptian Clothing Bank.   Because vintage ties are in influx, FWGT capitalises on the garments’ versatility to promote a more sustainable approach towards fashion in general. This competition is part of a larger campaign FWGT is working on to encourage people to use what they already have to satisfy their needs, and will involve more events and online initiatives in the future. Anyone, from beginner to professional, can compete, though only the most creative will win.
