Egypt's Renewable Energy Capacity Will Increase 28% Before Summer 2026
The planned renewable expansion comes alongside measures to secure fuel supplies and stabilise electricity production.
Approximately 2,500 megawatts of renewable energy capacity are set to be added to Egypt’s national electricity grid before next summer as part of broader efforts to secure a stable power supply.
The plan was outlined following a high-level meeting chaired by President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Minister of Electricity Mahmoud Esmat, and Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi.
Alongside expanding renewable capacity, the meeting addressed measures to maintain uninterrupted electricity generation by securing adequate fuel supplies for power plants.
Authorities reviewed preparations to ensure sufficient natural gas availability for power generation, particularly in light of ongoing regional tensions and their potential impact on global energy prices.
Discussions also covered maintaining strategic reserves of petroleum products to safeguard fuel supplies for electricity generation and key productive sectors.
Officials examined domestic production levels of natural gas, crude oil and condensates, as well as outstanding payments owed to foreign energy companies operating in Egypt.
Efforts to settle these dues and encourage further exploration activity and investment in the oil and gas sector were also reviewed.
Plans to expand energy infrastructure were discussed, including the development of facilities to receive liquefied natural gas imports and the deployment of regasification vessels to support supply security while domestic production is strengthened.
The meeting additionally addressed the modernisation of existing oil refineries to increase production capacity, enhance value-added processing and reduce reliance on fuel imports.
Regional energy cooperation was also discussed, including a recently signed memorandum of understanding between Egypt and Libya covering collaboration in oil and natural gas exploration, refinery development, energy transportation and petrochemical projects.
