Egypt's First Natural Silk Centre to Be Built in New Valley
The 250 feddan site targets around 25 tonnes of natural silk within four years to supply textiles carpets and medical uses.

Egypt’s first integrated natural silk production centre is being established in El Kharga, New Valley. The centre will span 250 feddans and is positioned as the nucleus of a national silk localisation programme. It is expected to produce around 25 tonnes of natural silk within four years, supplying raw material to textiles, carpets and certain medical products.
Training and awareness programmes will accompany the project, including distribution of mulberry leaves and silkworm eggs to households for supervised home based production. The integrated system will cover cultivation, processing and marketing, and natural silk production would add value, generate jobs, increase farmers’ incomes and reduce reliance on imports.
The protocol establishing the new centre was signed by the Ministry of Local Development, the New Valley governorate, and the Agricultural Research Centre.
