Al-Azhar University Opens Indonesian Language Department
Launched on November 6th, 2025 after a memorandum of understanding signed by Indonesia’s education minister and Al-Azhar University’s president.
Al-Azhar University in Cairo has opened a new Indonesian Language Department within its Faculty of Languages and Translation, following a memorandum of understanding signed by Indonesia’s Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and Al-Azhar University.
Established through collaboration between Indonesia’s Ministry of Education, the Indonesian Embassy in Cairo, and Al-Azhar University, the department aims to strengthen academic exchange and deepen cultural understanding between Egypt and Indonesia.
The addition brings the total number of languages taught at Al-Azhar to 15, expanding the university’s global reach and linguistic diversity. Around 350 students have already enrolled in the programme, which is supported by the Indonesian government through the provision of qualified instructors. The inauguration, attended by senior university officials and Indonesia’s Ambassador to Egypt, Lutfi Rauf.
