2,000-Year-Old Sunken City Unearthed off Alexandria

Sections of a submerged ancient city have been brought to the surface off the coast of Alexandria, including limestone buildings, reservoirs, and a 125-metre dock dating back over two millennia.

The site lies in Abu Qir Bay and is thought to be part of Canopus, a major settlement during the Ptolemaic dynasty and later under Roman rule. Artefacts retrieved include statues of royal figures and sphinxes, among them a partially preserved sphinx bearing the cartouche of Rameses II, as well as the remains of a merchant ship, stone anchors, and a harbour crane.

The city was lost due to earthquakes and rising sea levels. Most of the ruins remain underwater, classified as protected heritage, while recovered pieces will undergo conservation ahead of display.
