This New Art Book Pays Tribute to Giza Zoo's Animals
A collective work by Egyptian artists, The Giza Zoo Lovers Club is a follow-up on the Giza Zoo Collective's recent art exhibit.
Maadi-based print and design studio Rizo Masr has partnered with artists from The Giza Zoo Collective to publish The Giza Zoo Lovers Club, an illustrated art book centred on memories of Cairo’s historic zoo.
The Giza Zoo Collective formed in 2023, just days before Giza Zoo closed for renovations, bringing together Egyptian artists interested in documenting and reflecting on the site during its final days before redevelopment.
The book grew out of a shared sketchbook that circulated across the country, passing through the hands of more than 15 artists who responded to each other’s drawings while adding their own impressions of the zoo, its visitors, and the animals once housed there.
Developed in the lead-up to the collective’s exhibition 'Darb Fi Al Hadeeqa' at Darb 1718 in November 2025, the publication blends nostalgia with quiet critique, functioning both as a visual archive and a tribute to a place deeply embedded in Cairo’s cultural memory.
The book is now available at the studio’s store in Maadi. The Giza Zoo is expected to reopen later this year following renovations.
