Giza Zoo Will Open Late 2026 After Three Years of Development
The historic zoo will reopen with upgraded habitats, restored landmarks and a new tunnel linking it to Orman Garden.
Giza Zoo is scheduled to reopen to the public in the fourth quarter of 2026 following nearly three years of redevelopment aimed at upgrading animal welfare standards, visitor facilities and the site's historic infrastructure.
The project includes a new tunnel linking the zoo with Orman Garden, allowing visitors to move between the two neighbouring attractions through a single integrated route. The redevelopment also focuses on modernising infrastructure, redesigning animal habitats and improving visitor services while preserving the zoo's architectural and historical character.
A new sign bearing the name 'Genenet El Hayawanat' has also been installed at one of the entrances as part of the site's updated visual identity. Covering 112 feddans, the zoo is home to more than 3,000 historic trees and rare plants, alongside 186 species of mammals, birds and reptiles. Established during the reign of Khedive Ismail, it is regarded as the third-oldest zoological garden in the world.
Redevelopment work officially began on July 9th, 2023, after the operating consortium assumed management of the site. The project includes upgrades to walkways and utilities, improvements to animal enclosures, and the restoration of heritage landmarks including the Eiffel Bridge, Japanese Hall, Royal Hall, Tea Island, the Gabalaya and the Animal Museum.
