Saudi Arabian film ‘Basma’ will premiere on Netflix on June 6th. The film serves as the directorial debut of actress Fatima AlBanawi, who also wrote the script and stars as the main character.
‘Basma’ follows the story of a young woman who returns home to Jeddah after studying in America. There, she finds herself grappling with shock and grief after finding out that her father is suffering from a mental illness. Produced by Egyptian Mohamed Hafzy and AlBanwai’s own Alf Wad Production House, ‘Basma’ was shot almost entirely in Jeddah.
AlBanawi previously came to fame after her performance in Mahmoud Sabbagh’s comedy film, ‘Barakah Meets Barakah’, the Kingdom’s second entry ever into the Academy Awards in 2016. She also stars in the Kingdom’s 2023 Oscars-submission, ‘Alhamour H.A.’
