Nearly 10,000 Private Schools Enrol 2.7 Million Students
Education specialist Rafaat Fayad says around 600 of Egypt’s private schools are international, within a system serving 25 million students.
Egypt has nearly 10,000 private schools enrolling around 2.7 million students, according to education specialist Rafaat Fayad. Speaking to Azza Mostafa on Al Hayat TV on September 22nd, 2026, Fayad said around 600 of these are international schools, while total enrolment across Egypt’s general education system stands at approximately 25 million.
Fayad said most private schools charge tuition fees he considers affordable for families and see relatively few serious disputes over payment. Problems, he said, tend to emerge among a smaller group of schools positioning themselves at the premium end of the market, where parents may be asked to make additional payments beyond tuition fees.
His remarks draw a distinction within Egypt’s private education sector: while international schools account for a relatively small share of its nearly 10,000 institutions, private education as a whole serves roughly 2.7 million students. Fayad did not provide further breakdowns by region, school type or educational stage.
