El Gouna Film Festival (GFF) will mark the legacy of Egyptian filmmaker Mohamed Khan with two panel discussions during its ninth edition, running from October 15th to 23rd.

The late filmmaker is one of Egypt’s most influential filmmakers, particularly for being part of a pioneering wave of realist cinema. He is most known for ‘The Wife of an Important Man’ (1987), ‘Dreams of Hind and Camilia’ (1988), ‘El Harreef’ (1983)’ and more.

Titled ‘The Unlikely Hero: Men in the Cinema of Mohamed Khan’ and ‘Her Own Story: Women Beyond the Supporting Role in Khan’s Films’, the panels will examine Khan’s approach to masculinity, femininity and the social realities shaping his characters.

The first will explore Khan’s restless, vulnerable and morally ambiguous male protagonists, while the second will look at how his female characters were given desires, contradictions and narratives beyond their relationships with men.
