Korean Cultural Centre Launches ‘Ahlan Korea’ Programme in Cairo
A new cultural series at the Korean Cultural Centre introduces Egyptian audiences to Korean cities, starting with Gangneung.
The Korean Cultural Centre in Dokki has launched the first edition of ‘Ahlan Korea’, a new monthly cultural programme designed to introduce Korean cities and culture to Egyptian audiences.
The inaugural event focused on Gangneung, a coastal city on Korea’s East Sea, presenting its historical heritage alongside aspects of contemporary life. The programme explored Gangneung’s cultural and visual identity, highlighting the city’s relationship with its natural surroundings and long-standing traditions.
Visitors took part in a guided exhibition tour featuring traditional Korean artefacts, joined a cultural quiz centred on the city, and were invited to wear the traditional hanbok for commemorative photographs.
The event also included a tasting session inspired by Gangneung’s local cuisine. Presentations introduced attendees to local folk legends and elements of Korea’s intangible cultural heritage recognised by UNESCO, alongside an overview of Gangneung’s major landmarks.
The city’s role as a host for ice sports events during the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics was also outlined as part of its modern cultural profile. The Korean Cultural Centre said the programme reflects the depth of cultural exchange between South Korea and Egypt, with further editions planned to cover literature, arts and broader cultural themes.
‘Ahlan Korea’ will continue throughout 2026 in cooperation with the Korean Tourism Organization, with each monthly edition spotlighting a different Korean city and offering Egyptian audiences an immersive introduction to Korea’s cultural landscape.
