On her latest trilingual single, ‘Love TKO’, London-based Egyptian artist Layal navigates the exhaustion of a decaying relationship through a fluid blend of English, Arabic and French.

In this episode of Word, Layal breaks down how the track captures the mature acceptance of outgrowing a lover through clever wordplay, mirroring the complexity of a connection that essentially “ran its course” before either party fully acknowledged the end.

Faced with a partner who seems “addicted to misery,” the lyrics describe a scenario where Layal is forced to deliver a metaphorical “low blow” to break the cycle; a move that results in the titular TKO (technical knockout).

In the French bridge, Layal examines the clinical nature of indifference, framing boredom as a sickness and viewing a partner’s lack of care as a disease. She also notes that while the French language lends these biting sentiments a softer, more melodic sound, the underlying message remains one of cold finality.
