AlUla Expands Saffron Cultivation Trials

AlUla is expanding saffron cultivation trials as part of efforts to diversify crops and strengthen the sustainability of its agricultural sector.

The initiative forms part of the Estidamah programme, a national project focused on localising high-value crops and improving agricultural productivity.

Led by the National Research and Development Center for Sustainable Agriculture in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment Water and Agriculture and King Saud University, the programme has produced premium-grade saffron meeting international standards.

Field and research trials have been conducted across 10 regions, with a focus on adapting cultivation methods to local environmental conditions and improving value chains for high-return crops.

The programme provides farmers with technical support, training and field monitoring, covering areas such as soil preparation, crop management, harvesting and processing.

More than 500,000 saffron corms have been distributed to 43 farmers, with research outcomes applied across more than 40 farms.
