Restoration Projects Underway at Hatshepsut, Karnak & Luxor Temples

Restoration and development works are underway across major temple sites in Luxor, covering both the East and West Banks ahead of the upcoming winter tourism season.

The programme, led by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities through the Supreme Council of Antiquities, includes the Luxor Temple and Karnak Temple Complex on the East Bank, alongside Hatshepsut Temple and Seti I Temple on the West Bank.

According to officials, the works follow a defined timeline aimed at completion before peak tourist arrivals, with a focus on improving visitor experience while preserving the archaeological integrity of the sites. At Karnak, upgrades include improvements to the control building for the electronic surveillance system, alongside plans to expand camera coverage across surrounding areas.

At Luxor Temple, expansion works will increase the entrance hall to around 250 square metres, alongside the addition of six new entry gates, more X-ray screening devices and ticketing machines to improve visitor flow. Implementation at Luxor Temple is scheduled for the summer months, with temporary adjustments to entry and exit routes during construction.

Additional works include expanding shaded waiting areas and upgrading the forecourt in line with the site’s historic character. At Hatshepsut Temple, developments include upgrades to the visitor centre, installation of new screening systems and the creation of an exhibition hall featuring interactive displays on the temple’s history.

Entry points are being expanded with electronic gates, while surveillance, audio systems and fire safety infrastructure are being updated.

Conservation at Seti I Temple focuses on cleaning surfaces to reveal original inscriptions and colours, alongside structural reinforcement of walls and the removal of vegetation. Visitor routes are being established, with additional upgrades including a new entrance hall and interpretive signage.
