Social Football Is Bringing Amateur Football Into the Digital Age
Social Football’s new app brings league registration, match statistics, Player Cards and chat into one platform as the Cairo project prepares to expand into Germany.
With its 10th season under way, Social Football has moved its operations onto its own app, bringing around 800 players onto one platform to manage bookings and track their progress.
Fathy says five new leagues have been agreed, although their locations and formats have not been announced. Social Football’s first German league is planned for November, with the city and exact launch date yet to be confirmed.
Speaking to SceneSports, Social Football founder Mahmoud Fathy said managing events digitally had saved the team time previously spent coordinating leagues through platforms such as WhatsApp, allowing it to focus on expansion.
For the first time, players can access detailed statistics after every match, from attendance and win, draw and loss records to their number of Player of the Match awards. They can also rate their teammates, with each player building a digital profile known as a Player Card.
The app also lets players browse leagues across Greater Cairo and register for events directly, without contacting league organisers. An integrated chat feature keeps communication within the platform, eliminating the need for external apps.
A rewards feature planned for November will allow players to redeem league points for products through a scheme involving more than 500 stores, according to Fathy.
The locations and formats of the five new leagues have not yet been confirmed, nor has the city or exact launch date for the first German league.
Fathy also plans to bring Social Football’s competition system to more companies, building on existing leagues for private schools, sports clubs and charitable organisations.
The platform is also expanding beyond football into basketball, running and padel. Its first step is already underway with the launch of Social Tennis League, now in its inaugural season as part of the wider Social Sports Leagues series.
Founded in Cairo in 2017, Social Football set out to reshape the five-a-side football experience. It now operates leagues across four main areas in Greater Cairo: Maadi, Heliopolis, New Cairo and Sheikh Zayed, with around 800 registered players, including dedicated leagues for younger and older participants.
Its competition system, introduced in 2021, places 21 players in each league, with weekly matches earning points throughout a season lasting several months. League winners move up a division, while the top-division champion earns the right to recruit a player directly into the following season.
As its community has grown, Social Football has secured commercial partnerships and sponsorships to offer prizes, products and other player benefits. It has also introduced team kits and digital media coverage to build a stronger identity around its competitions.
The platform aims to create a sustainable amateur sports community built around regular participation and healthy competition. Players can join through its website or Instagram account.
