The table tennis star pulled off a major upset before reaching a historic Round of 16.
Egyptian table tennis star Dina Meshref became the first Egyptian player to defeat a world top-10 opponent and the first Egyptian woman to reach the Round of 16 at a WTT Grand Smash at the 2026 United States Smash, defeating China’s Shi Xunyao 3–1 in the women’s singles Round of 32.
Shi entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed and was ranked World No. 16 at the time, making the victory a major statement for Meshref, who was ranked around No. 35.
Meshref fought back after dropping the second game, winning 11–4, 4–11, 11–9 and 11–9 to secure the upset.
The win sent her into the Round of 16, where she faced World No. 1 Sun Yingsha. While Meshref ultimately fell 3–0, her run marked a great achievement.
