XP Conversations - Freek: “A Bigger Vision Than Making It in GCC”

UAE-based Somali rapper Freek has been a prominent figure in the Arabic drill and trap music scene ever since his debut in 2014. His hit track ‘Wala Kilma’ was also a monumental step in his career, as the track was used in an advertising campaign for Adidas featuring Egyptian football star Mohammed Salah. After finding success within the region, the rapper’s music had also found an audience in the United Kingdom, with British rappers such as Eyez and Young Tribez remixing his music.

In this XP conversation, Freek tells us about making the decision to quit his full-time job in favor of pursuing his rap career, and about setting his sights past the GCC and MENA region, looking instead to connect with a global audience. We also hear about the rapper being welcomed with open arms into the UK rap scene, working on remixes with British artists and appearing on the popular show ‘Fire in The Booth’ with Charlie Sloth.
