UAE Becomes Second Country to Approve Lipfendra for High Cholesterol

The Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE) has approved Lipfendra, a once-daily oral medicine for adults with elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, making the UAE the second country in the world to authorise the treatment.

According to the regulator, Lipfendra is indicated for adults with raised LDL cholesterol, including certain inherited forms of the condition, and is intended to be prescribed as part of a treatment plan determined by a healthcare professional. The medicine is designed to be used alongside a balanced diet and regular physical activity.

Often referred to as "bad" cholesterol, LDL is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The EDE said the newly approved therapy provides clinicians with an additional oral treatment option for adults who require further intervention beyond lifestyle changes to help lower LDL cholesterol levels.

The regulator also urged people with high cholesterol to maintain healthy habits, including regular exercise and a balanced diet, and to consult healthcare professionals to determine the most appropriate treatment for their condition. According to the EDE, effective management of high LDL cholesterol can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and support overall health.
