RTA Unveils 11 KM of Bridges & Tunnels in Dubai

The Roads and Transport Authority has awarded a contract to redevelop major road corridors, including Umm Suqeim Street, Al Wasl Road, Al Safa Street and multiple intersections along Jumeirah Street, as part of a broader effort to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow.
The programme includes the construction of 11 kilometres of bridges and tunnels, alongside lane expansions and intersection upgrades across high-traffic areas.
On Umm Suqeim Street, which connects Jumeirah Street to Emirates Road and Al Qudra Street, the project will enhance links to Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road. Travel time between Jumeirah Street and Al Khail Road is expected to drop from 20 minutes to six minutes. Works include six upgraded intersections, four bridges and two tunnels extending 4.1 kilometres, with sections widened to five lanes in each direction.
Al Wasl Road will undergo a 15-kilometre upgrade, including lane expansion and improvements to seven intersections supported by five tunnels spanning 3.85 kilometres. Authorities said journey times are expected to be reduced by half, while capacity will increase from 8,000 to 12,000 vehicles per hour.
Al Safa Street will see a 1.5-kilometre upgrade featuring two bridges and two tunnels extending 3.12 kilometres. Travel time along the corridor is projected to fall from 12 minutes to three minutes, with capacity also rising to 12,000 vehicles per hour.
Seven intersections along Jumeirah Street will be upgraded at ground level to ease congestion across the corridor. Overall capacity on Umm Suqeim Street is expected to reach 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, while Al Wasl and Al Safa Streets are projected to handle up to 12,000 vehicles per hour.
