Mount Arafat Shading Project Expands Ahead of Hajj 2026
The second phase introduces new canopies and cooling systems, increasing total coverage to more than 272,000 square metres.
Shaded and cooled areas around Mount Arafat have been expanded ahead of the 2026 Hajj season, following the completion of a second phase of development works.
The project was implemented by the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites, which said the expansion has increased shaded and cooled space to five times its previous size, covering more than 272,000 square metres across both phases.
Phase two includes the installation of 18 canopies equipped with 36 misting fans, along with seven cooling units and 107 misting fan columns.
These additions build on the first phase completed in 2025, which introduced three canopies, six misting fans, and more than 165 misting fan columns.
Officials said the project is part of wider efforts to improve conditions at key pilgrimage sites, supporting pilgrims during rituals by reducing heat exposure and enhancing overall comfort.
