Interactive Map & QR Codes to Document Egypt's Heritage Trees

Egypt's National Organization for Urban Harmony is developing an interactive map to document rare and long-lived trees, allowing the public to access information about heritage trees through QR codes installed beside them.

The initiative uses geographic information systems to create a national register of historically and environmentally significant trees.

Visitors will be able to scan QR plates placed next to each documented tree to view its record. According to the organisation, the project forms part of broader efforts to preserve the country's cultural and natural heritage.

In 2025, it documented 1,043 heritage trees and prepared registration forms modelled on those used for listed heritage buildings.

Mohammed Abu Saada, head of the National Organization for Urban Harmony, said the initiative aims to establish a comprehensive register of Egypt's rare and long-lived trees.

The project is being implemented in cooperation with the Ministries of Environment and Agriculture, the Plant Research Center and several local civil society organisations.

Documentation efforts extend beyond public parks to include rare and historic trees found within residential neighbourhoods, reflecting a broader approach to preserving the country's natural landmarks.
