Egypt Invests EGP 57 Billion to Modernise Sinai Electricity Grid
The programme expands transmission and distribution networks across North and South Sinai to support new development and improve supply.
Egypt has invested around EGP 57 billion to modernise the electricity grid across the Sinai Peninsula, expanding transmission and distribution capacity to support urban, industrial, agricultural and tourism development in North and South Sinai.
The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company has established 29 transformer substations across Sinai, with a 30th under construction. The transmission network now includes around 3,000 kilometres of extra-high-voltage overhead circuits and underground cables, alongside 1,150 kilometres of high-voltage lines. Projects completed since July 2025 include the Zagazig–East Banha and Oyoun Moussa–New Ismailia 500-kV lines, as well as the Nuweiba–Saint Catherine 220-kV connection.
Distribution upgrades now serve around 280,000 subscribers across 96 centres and villages. Works have included 550 transformers and substations, more than 15,000 medium- and low-voltage poles and over 3,800 kilometres of overhead lines and underground cables. Electricity connections have also been extended to strategic facilities, residential and industrial projects and seawater desalination plants.
Further work includes an automated control centre for medium- and low-voltage networks in Sharm El-Sheikh, intended to identify faults more quickly and reduce outage repair times. Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister Mahmoud Esmat said the wider programme is also aimed at building a more flexible smart grid capable of integrating larger renewable-energy capacities.
