21 Saudi Cities Receive WHO Healthy City Accreditation
The 21 accredited cities give the Kingdom the highest total across the Eastern Mediterranean and North Africa.
Twenty-one cities in Saudi Arabia now hold World Health Organization Healthy City accreditation, the highest total among countries in the Eastern Mediterranean and North Africa.
The accreditations form part of the Ministry of Health’s Healthy Cities programme, which applies a broader public-health framework to urban development rather than focusing solely on clinical services.
Its work spans community participation, health services, emergency preparedness and improvements to the urban environment, alongside planning, education and environmental measures intended to support physical and mental wellbeing.
The Ministry of Health’s Healthy Cities programme is also recognised as a WHO collaborating centre, the first dedicated to Healthy Cities in the region and the fourth globally. WHO formally designated the centre in 2022 to support the expansion of regional Healthy Cities programmes and related public-health strategies.
