Egypt Records Sharp Rise in Global Safety Rankings Over Past Decade

Egypt has recorded a marked improvement in international safety and crime indicators over the past decade, moving from among higher-risk countries to ranking within the safer tier globally, according to data released by the Cabinet Media Centre. The update draws on multiple indicators tracked between 2014 and 2025 by the Institute for Economics and Peace.

According to the institute’s violent crime index, Egypt advanced 93 places over the period, ranking 29th globally in 2025 compared to 122nd in 2014. Under the index methodology, a higher ranking reflects lower levels of violent crime. The Cabinet Media Centre said the shift points to a sustained decline in crime rates over the past decade.

Progress was also recorded in homicide indicators compiled by the same institute and measured per 100,000 people. Egypt improved by 14 places in this category, reaching rank 50 in 2025, up from 64 in 2014.

The largest change was recorded in public perceptions of safety. In the index measuring whether people feel safe walking alone at night, Egypt moved up 111 places, reaching rank 32 in 2025 from 143 in 2014. The perception score improved from 3.75 in 2014 to 1.9 in 2025, placing the country among those with the lowest recorded levels in this measure and among the most improved globally over the period.
