Grand Egyptian Museum Accredited as Carbon Neutral Landmark by GOEIC

The Grand Egyptian Museum has been accredited as a carbon-neutral facility, according to an announcement by the General Organization for Export and Import Control (GOEIC). Located on the edge of the Giza Plateau, the museum has received official environmental certification aligned with Egypt’s green economy objectives under Egypt Vision 2030.

The designation was confirmed by the Ministry of Environment following the completion and approval of a verified carbon footprint report. Carbon-neutrality certificates were issued by the ministry and registered with the United Nations Secretariat, marking the first time comprehensive carbon accounting has been applied to a national mega-project in Egypt.

The accreditation followed a two-year verification process covering the museum’s operational activities during 2023 and 2024. Emissions generated by daily functions, including lighting, climate control, visitor circulation and support services, were measured and reviewed to ensure accuracy and consistency. The process was conducted through the Environmental Validation and Verification Unit of GOEIC, which is authorised to carry out advanced environmental assessments.

The evaluation also extended to the museum’s official opening ceremony in November 2025. Both projected and actual emissions associated with the event were assessed to confirm compliance with the same sustainability standards applied to routine operations.

With this certification, the Grand Egyptian Museum is positioned as a national benchmark for sustainable cultural institutions. The accreditation integrates environmental accountability into the management of a large-scale public project and supports broader climate action goals under Egypt Vision 2030 and the National Climate Change Strategy 2050. The museum continues to apply environmentally responsible practices and develop educational initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability among visitors while maintaining long-term operational oversight through dedicated technical committees.
