What Closes at 9 PM & What Stays Open in Egypt

Amid soaring energy prices caused by the US-Israel war on Iran, the Egyptian government has introduced new measures to reduce energy consumption throughout the country. These include a recently announced closure of shops, restaurants and cafes at 9 PM for a period of one month, with some exceptions.

According to the new regulation, all shops, cafes, and restaurants must close at 9 PM every day except Thursday, Friday and official holidays, when they will instead close at 10 PM. This includes shopping malls, commercial centres, sports and social clubs, youth centres, bazaars, nightclubs and discos, tourist goods stores, and souvenir shops.

However, exemptions are made for some essential services and tourist-related activities.

Grocery stores, bakeries, pharmacies, fruit and vegetable shops, poultry stores, and wholesale markets throughout Egypt are exempt from the new regulations, and can remain open past the curfew. Home delivery services will also continue to operate around the clock. Tourist-licensed restaurants and cafés, including those attached to hotel establishments, have also been exempted.

Exemptions are also made for public shops and tourist facilities in South Sinai, Hurghada, Marsa Alam, Luxor, and Aswan governorates. In Cairo and Giza, shops and tourist facilities along the Nile corniche are exempted.
