Trans Fat Ban Approved Under National Nutrition Strategy

A nationwide ban on partially hydrogenated oils has been approved under the National Healthy Nutrition Strategy 2031, targeting a key source of artificial trans fats in the food system.
The strategy, endorsed by the UAE Cabinet, includes 16 initiatives aimed at reshaping how food is produced, marketed and consumed across the country.
Partially hydrogenated oils are widely recognised as a major contributor to artificial trans fats, which are linked to increased risks of cardiovascular disease.
The framework also introduces stricter controls on the promotion of unhealthy food and beverages, particularly those targeting children, alongside measures to limit the availability of high-sugar and ultra-processed foods in school canteens.
In addition to regulatory changes, the strategy includes a national digital nutrition guide designed to support households with meal planning. The platform will provide portion guidance, culturally relevant recipes and alternatives aligned with official dietary recommendations.
