Rain Revives Historic Wells in Saudi Arabia’s Northern Borders

Recent rainfall has filled the Qalban Al-Duwaid depression near Rafha in Saudi Arabia’s Northern Borders, reviving historic wells across the basin. The Saudi Press Agency reported more than 250 wells arranged in a circular pattern, reflecting a traditional approach to accessing groundwater in the desert.

Each well is part of a broader water system within the depression, and seasonal rains continue to reshape the landscape, bringing dormant features back into use.

The regional branch of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture has launched a project to protect the wells from deterioration. Measures include cataloguing and monitoring the wells, installing secure covers, and reinforcing structures with concrete.

The ministry also aims to safeguard the water from contamination. These efforts are designed to ensure visitor safety while preserving the wells as a sustainable and vital water resource.
