Mobile Subscriptions & Internet Use Surge in Egypt

Egypt's mobile telecommunications sector has witnessed a substantial increase in subscriptions and mobile internet usage in recent years. According to the ICT Indicators Quarterly Bulletin for Q4 of 2023, mobile subscriptions surged by 6.1 million in 2023 compared to 2022, reaching a total of 106.2 million subscriptions by December 2023. This represents a significant rise from 99.38 million subscriptions recorded in December 2022.

The growth extends to mobile internet usage as well. The same report highlights a rise of six million mobile internet users in the same period, bringing the total to 77.93 million users. This translates to an 8.6% increase, indicating a growing reliance on mobile internet access.

Experts attribute this surge in mobile internet use to factors like the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent social distancing measures implemented. These restrictions likely led to increased reliance on mobile communication and online activities.

Looking at the bigger picture, mobile internet subscriptions in Egypt have witnessed a 77.9% growth between 2019 and 2022, rising from 39 million to 69.4 million subscriptions. This trend aligns with Egypt's growing population, which reached 105.8 million as of January 2024, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics.
