Kasr Al Ainy Receives ESC Accreditation, Solidifying Egypt’s Place on the Global Cardiology Map
The Faculty of Medicine at Cairo University has reached a major milestone in its pursuit of clinical excellence and global recognition. The Department of Cardiology and Vascular Surgery at Kasr Al Ainy has officially been accredited by the Heart Failure Association (HFA), a division of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), as a certified centre for the management and treatment of heart failure.
This prestigious designation places Kasr Al Ainy among a select group of institutions worldwide—only 14 countries affiliated with the ESC currently hold this status. It further underscores the hospital’s longstanding reputation as a leading hub of specialised care, advanced research, and medical education in the region.
The achievement was secured under the leadership of Professor Dr. Hossam Salah Murad, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the Board of Directors at Kasr Al Ainy Hospital. Dr. Salah oversaw the department’s adherence to the HFA’s rigorous criteria and provided strategic guidance throughout the accreditation process. He described the recognition as a reflection of the Faculty’s commitment to elevating the quality of healthcare in Egypt and positioning the country at the forefront of global medical innovation.
Heading the Department of Cardiology and Vascular Surgery is Dr. Hesham Salah El-Din, who has built on the foundational work of Professor Magdy Abdel Hamid—a prominent ESC member and former department head. Prof. Abdel Hamid initiated the accreditation process over a year ago and led the preparation of the required documentation, working closely with the department’s Heart Failure Working Group: Dr. Ahmed Kamal, Dr. Salma Essam, Dr. Salma Salam, Dr. Mariam Khaled, and Dr. Ahmed Osama.
With this recognition, Kasr Al Ainy is now poised to expand its collaborations with other accredited centres, participate in advanced clinical research, and share expertise in the treatment of heart failure—one of the most widespread cardiovascular conditions globally, affecting nearly 2% of the population.
The European Society of Cardiology, established in 1950 and headquartered in Sophia Antipolis, France, is one of the most influential organisations in cardiovascular medicine. It encompasses more than 100,000 healthcare professionals worldwide, offering training, publishing scientific journals, and convening international conferences to advance the field. Egypt’s membership in the ESC dates back to 1965, with the Egyptian Cardiology Society recognised as one of its earliest member societies.
This accreditation marks more than a recognition of past excellence—it signals a new chapter for Kasr Al Ainy as a centre of global medical leadership and a beacon of cutting-edge cardiac care in Egypt and the wider region.
