Grand Egyptian Museum to Host Global Heritage Conference in September

The Grand Egyptian Museum will host the international conference ‘Heritage Cities in a Modern World: Restoration to Reactivation’ on Wednesday, September 10th, 2025. Organised by the Victoria and Albert Museum’s Culture in Crisis Programme in partnership with British Council Egypt, the event will explore the challenges of preserving historic urban centres within their modern contexts.

The conference will address issues such as climate change, rapid urban development, declining craft skills, and reduced community engagement. Using Cairo as its primary case study, discussions will draw on examples from around the world to examine how heritage preservation can work hand-in-hand with sustainable development, civic participation, and climate resilience.

Local and international experts will present projects showcasing strategies for balancing heritage conservation with contemporary urban needs.

To register for the conference, interested attendees can email cultureincrisis@vam.ac.uk with their name, occupation, institutional affiliation, and any access or dietary requirements.
