First Electric Buses Join Dubai’s Public Transport Fleet

The Roads and Transport Authority has introduced the first 40 electric buses into service in Dubai, marking the initial phase of a broader rollout of 250 new vehicles as part of a wider procurement of 735 buses. The new fleet complies with European low-carbon emissions standards and forms part of the emirate’s long-term transition to cleaner public transport.
The move aligns with Dubai’s climate neutrality target for 2050. According to the authority, the introduction of electric buses will be followed by a gradual increase in zero-emission vehicles across the public transport network. The strategy aims to convert all public buses, taxis and limousine vehicles to zero-emission operation by mid-century, supporting the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 and wider national climate objectives.
The first electric model deployed is a 12-metre bus manufactured by Zhongtong. Designed for Dubai’s operating conditions, the vehicle offers a single-charge range of up to 280 kilometres and is powered by a 434 kilowatt-hour battery, supported by a 360 kilowatt ABB charging system. It can carry up to 70 passengers and includes a 360-degree camera system to enhance safety. Before entering service, the bus underwent more than three months of testing in Dubai, including inspection and trial-operation phases. The authority reported positive results across propulsion stability, energy consumption efficiency and the performance of critical systems such as batteries, cooling and braking.
The new electric buses are equipped with advanced digital systems, including driver behaviour monitoring, automated passenger counting linked to the fare collection system and driver identity authentication integrated with the operating platform. Accessibility and passenger amenities include low-floor access for people with disabilities, dedicated seating for children, bicycle spaces, onboard Wi-Fi and mobile phone charging points.
