Egypt Passes Law Giving Al-Azhar Final Say on Contradicting Fatwa

The House of Representatives has passed new legislation regulating the issuance of fatwas, formally granting Al-Azhar the final authority over any contradicting official religious edicts. The law marks the conclusion of an extended dispute between Al-Azhar and the Ministry of Awqaf over religious jurisdiction.

According to Parliament’s statement, the law also intends to streamline the fatwa process and ensure consistency in religious messaging. It is part of wider efforts by the Egyptian government to regulate religious discourse and uphold what officials describe as moderate, unified interpretations of Islam.

No specific penalties were outlined for unauthorised fatwas under the legislation, but future regulations are expected to clarify enforcement mechanisms. The law now awaits ratification by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
