32 Unlicensed Psychiatric and Addiction Centres Closed in Egypt

Egyptian authorities have shut down 32 unlicensed psychiatric and addiction treatment centres across four governorates, the Health Ministry announced, as part of a nationwide campaign against illegal medical facilities.

The closures targeted centres operating in Alexandria, Sharqiya, Beheira, and Dakahlia after inspection teams found widespread violations of licensing and safety regulations.

Investigators reported deficiencies ranging from unqualified staff and poor infection control to mishandled medical waste and incomplete patient records. In Alexandria alone, eight centres were closed in the Abu Talat and Agami districts, while 11 facilities in Sharqiya’s 10th of Ramadan City and another 11 in Beheira were also shut down. In Dakahlia, authorities reviewed two licensed facilities and issued warnings over pharmaceutical violations.

The crackdown follows a deadly fire at an unlicensed addiction centre in Benha earlier this week that claimed seven lives. Health officials have long warned that unlicensed centres, often run out of apartments, villas, or farms, pose serious risks due to unsafe accommodation, lack of trained staff, and minimal emergency preparedness.

Inspection campaigns are expected to continue, with authorities promising ongoing oversight to curb unsafe practices and protect patients.
