Moroccan Photographer Karim Chater Gives Vintage a Casablanca Twist

Scroll through @style_beldi and you’re dropped straight into Karim Chater’s universe: a Casablanca kid turning dad’s old tie and forgotten tracksuits into something that feels strangely futuristic. The model and artist grew up in Sidi Moumen, a working-class neighborhood on the northeastern edge of Casablanca, and still calls it home. It’s his set, his archive, and his styling school all at once.

Karim’s eye was trained early, digging through his father’s closet and stumbling on pieces from the ’80s that felt more alive than anything new. That mix of memory and marketplace became the backbone of Style Beldi – a love letter to Morocco’s evolving fashion story, from caftans and djellabas to streetwear and sportswear.

On Instagram, where hundreds of thousands now follow along, Karim is stylist, photographer, and model in one. He stages looks in stairwells, side streets, rooftops and corner shops, finding beauty where people stopped looking. His style toys with the line between good and bad taste, pushing kitsch until it becomes aspirational: plastic flowers, retro sunglasses, football jerseys, and auntie-core prints reworked into something sharp.

Travel continued to expand the archive. He lands in new cities with an empty suitcase and leaves with the pieces no one else wanted. Most recently, he’s been building a photo series around a single talisman – his father’s tie – pushed to its campy extreme, shot everywhere from the US to Bali to back home in Morocco, a portable thread back to Sidi Moumen.

For this week’s Scene Selects, Karim breaks down six of his favorite looks, and the stories, streets, and secondhand treasures that brought them to life.

Look 1
“Full look made by me. The inspiration came from traditional Moroccan tapestry – the patterns, the texture, the spirit of home. I wanted to rework something very cultural into a modern and wearable piece.”

Look 2

“I shot this in my neighborhood, where I first started creating content. The idea was to show my journey – that I can still dress from thrift shops, but I also reached a point where I can mix them with luxury pieces. Two worlds, one identity.”

Look 3“This look mixes elegance with sportswear. I shot it in my neighborhood as well, and I referenced Morocco’s 2010 World Cup bid – a moment of hope and disappointment. A blend of class, street, and history.”

Shoes | Converse
Cap | Marlboro

Look 4
“I received the trousers first and loved them so much that I spent more than a year searching for a vest that matched perfectly. The character for this look is “Directeur de plage” – a stylish beach director with a Moroccan twist.”
Cap | Thrifted Marlboro
Vest | Thrifted
Trousers | Drôle de Monsieur

Look 5
“Shot in Cairo during Ramadan. We were just looking for a place to eat iftar, and suddenly we saw a camel walking in the street. It turned into an unplanned photoshoot — very spontaneous, very real”Tracksuit | Puma
Glasses | Ray-Ban
Shoes | Thrifted snake leather

Look 6
“This look was shot in the U.S., known as the land of the “White House.” The outfit is all black – and the tie is also black – referencing a Moroccan saying: “نضربو الكحل فالابيض” meaning “We add black to enhance the white.” A contrast of worlds, cultures, and styles.”
