Mshrf Runs Melodic Rap Through a Pop Framework on 'Taffy Nary'
Egyptian artist Mshrf makes his Raad Records debut with a dense blend of genres on ‘Taffy Nary’, produced by Mahib Sleat.
Marking his first release on RAAD Records, Cairo-based artist Mshrf dives headfirst into a busy blend of 2000s pop, North African instrumentation, and melodic rap on his latest single ‘Taffy Nary’. Navigating the aftermath of misplaced trust, the 21-year-old from Fayoum grapples with finding a balance between vulnerability and self-protection, while making peace with the situation he finds himself in.
Produced and mixed by Mahib Sleat and mastered by Marwan Samy, the track covers a lot of sonic ground. We're met immediately with a bouncy, chipper bassline that runs under a stripped-down North African-sounding beat, while autotuned vocals shift between melodic rap and singing. The chorus meets us with a hard pivot into full-on pop territory, where crisp drums and an infectious hook tie the instrumental together, and a rock-inflected guitar solo walks us back into the more laid-back verses.
The track's density and themes work to declare a new phase for Mshrf, one more concerned with genre-blending and live instrumentation than with following trends or playing it safe. Taken together, the musical and lyrical sensibilities of ‘Taffy Nary’ play like an artist closing one door and opening another, carrying more intention than before.
