De.Ville Tell a Casablanca Love Story on Beach-Ready Single ‘Didiwa’
The Montreal-based Moroccan duo return with 'Didiwa,' a breezy 80s-inspired single with a sneaky emotional undertone.
While Montreal-based Moroccan duo De.Ville stepped out of a five-year hiatus earlier this June with 'Unseen’, which offered a spare, contemplative opening statement, their latest release 'Didiwa' arrives with considerably more warmth and movement, delivering on a beach-ready summer single with a melancholic twist.
The song is built around a groovy bass line and funky guitars that pull from an 80s sonic palette, while lush synth pads and smooth melodic lines give the track its summery, unhurried feel. Raï inflections surface throughout, grounding the production in a North African sensibility, while the duo's characteristic somberness manages to find its way onto the poolside instrumental.
This tension comes mainly from singer Ziad Qoulaii's vocal performance, whose lower register sits comfortably enough within the breezy atmosphere, but when he lifts into falsetto, the effect is quietly devastating.
The duo describe the track as a portrait of love at its peak, where one person completely dissolves into another. It's a Casablanca love story, they say, and the city's particular mix of heat, tenderness, and restlessness comes through vividly in the track.
